Pearl Aday, though unknown to the general public, is surely not unprepared for the world of rock: we are indeed talking about the wife of Scott Ian (guitarist for Anthrax and now also for Pearl) and, at the same time, daughter of Michael Lee Aday, mostly known as Meat Loaf, for which she has toured the world as a backing vocalist for nine years.
In spite of kinship (even if both are not biological), the blonde Pearl is not influenced by the style of any of them.
Since the album cover is easy to guess her love for the 70s and for Janis Joplin (her biological father played drums for Janis Joplin and from her he stole the nickname Pearl for his daughter). So, we are talking about hard blues rock with trace of southern rock (outstanding are the autobiographical "Rock Child" and "Broken White"), sung by a rocker with balls who is not ashamed to show her female side in sweet ballads such as "My Heart Isn’t In It" and "Anything".
Pearl, with her scathing and gritty voice, is rightly the protagonist of the album, but the powerful and precise rhythm section and the two aggressive guitars certainly do not stand in the background.
All together, they create captivating songs that are sure going to be appreciated by anyone who grew up on AC/DC, Ted Nugent, Aerosmith and all the heroes of the '70s.

Pearl Aday, per quanto sconosciuta al grande pubblico, non è certo una sprovveduta nel mondo del rock: stiamo parlando infatti della moglie di Scott Ian, chitarrista di Anthrax e ora anche di Pearl, e figlia di Michael Lee Aday, noto ai più come Meat Loaf, per il quale, per ben nove anni, ha girato il mondo come corista.
A dispetto delle parentele (anche se entrambe non sono biologiche), la bionda Pearl non è influenzata dallo stile di nessuno di essi.
Fin dalla copertina dell'album è intuibile l'amore per i 70s e per una certa Janis Joplin (per cui il papà biologico della Aday suonò la batteria e da cui rubò il nomignolo Pearl per la figlia). Stiamo parlando quindi di un rock blues con venature sudiste e piuttosto hard (strepitose l'autobiografica "Rock Child" e "Broken White"), cantato da una rocker con le palle ma che non si vergogna di mostrare il lato più femminile in dolci ballad quali "My Heart Isn't In It" e "Anything".
Pearl, con la sua voce graffiante e grintosa, è giustamente la protagonista del disco, ma la sezione ritmica possente e precisa e le due aggressive chitarre non sono certo in secondo piano.
Tutto l'insieme crea canzoni coinvolgenti che saranno sicuramente apprezzate da chiunque sia cresciuto a pane ed AC/DC, Ted Nugent, Aerosmith e tutti gli eroi degli anni '70.

Intro:
This is the debut album for the St. Marks Social led by Jesse Malin who, after a ten-year solo career, is the leader of a band once again.

Notes:
Jesse Malin, though criminally underrated from the general public, is very appreciated by a number of well-known colleagues like Lucinda Williams, Ryan Adams or Bruce Springsteen (thanks to him and to "Broken Radio" from "Glitter In The Gutter" for letting me know about him in 2007).

In this new adventure, we find Jesse with a regular band but his nasal voice and his typical way to sing, sometimes graceless and some others gently low, are so distinctive that one might recall his name when listening to any project with Jesse Malin singing.

Anyway, comparing "Love It To Life" to the last records, the main difference I have noticed are guitars, they are more distorted, dirty, sometimes punk (listen to the anthems "Burning The Bowery" and "Burn The Bridge") and with a few brit influence, while folk and acoustic guitars are relegated  to a handful of songs (ie: "The Archer" and "Revelations"). Speaking about melodies, they are typical of  this 42-year-old New Yorker, the songs are filled of nocturnal urban moods (I think to the Clash oriented "Disco Ghetto"), they're often gloomy and with a "loser" feeling but never totally desperate.

This is not Jesse Malin's best album but his songs are always successful in catching me and getting inside, and even this new album does not disappoint my expectations.

Nick Jonas, giovanissimo membro degli idoli dei teen-ager Jonas Brothers, decide che è già arrivato il momento di prendersi qualche rischio e, formata una superband con artisti bravi e navigati tipo gli ex The New Power Generation di Prince, Tommy Barberella e Michael Bland, incide un disco solista che merita l'attenzione anche di chi ha in odio fenomeni commerciali e stelline da tv dei ragazzi.

Sotto la guida dell'ottimo producer (e bassista, per l'occasione) John Fields, Nick si produce in 10 interessanti tracce che svariano tra pop rock dei seventies, soul d'annata, blues e ammiccamenti funky, rivelando tutto il suo amore per la musica di Stevie Wonder, Prince ed Elvis Costello e un'abilità nello scrivere brani maturi e levigati non comune in songwriter così giovani.

A soli 17 anni, e nonostante una voce che non ha ancora acquisito tutti i registri adulti, la star della Disney pare già convinta dei propri mezzi e del proprio futuro: è nato il nuovo John Mayer?

NB: Sonny Thompson, altro ex The New Power Generation, ha preso il posto di David Harris nella band che sta accompagnando Nick Jonas nel suo primo tour americano con gli Administration

Non molti artisti oggi sono così prolifici in campo discografico come l'ex-chitarrista di Poison e Mr Big, Richie Kotzen. Considerando l'impressionante numero di concerti tenuti all'anno (ultimamente è stato spesso anche in Italia) è incredibile la frequenza con cui si propone sul mercato e soprattutto l'alto standard qualitativo delle sue uscite.
Oggi Richie è un artista completo: abile compositore, polistrumentista virtuoso, singer graziato da una voce degna dei migliori frontmen hard blues. Ed assistere ad un suo concerto - personalmente ho perso il conto delle volte che ho potuto ammirarlo nella dimensione live - è un'esperienza consigliatissima a tutti, perchè è soprattutto dal vivo che esprime il suo talento sciamanico.

Come ogni artista che si possa definire tale, Kotzen ha dichiarato che "Peace Sign", la sua ultima fatica in studio, è il suo disco migliore.
Per noi umili ascoltatori non lo è. Non ha tutta la classe soul e le melodie del recente progetto con Richie Zito "Wilson Hawk", non possiede il magico interplay tra musicisti creatosi nello stupendo "The Return Of The Mother Head's Family Reunion" (uscito come "Go Faster" negli USA), non ha quell'anima agrodolce che faceva vibrare "Into The Black".

Ma rimane un ottimo disco, in cui lo stile del quarantenne artista della Pennsylvania, ormai maturo e riconoscibilissimo, sa soddisfare i palati del popolo della sei-corde come quelli degli amanti del rock in cui blues, soul e funky si fondono in un riuscito tutt'uno musicale.
Le radici dell'album vanno ricercate nel sound senza tempo di Stones, Free, Faces, Hendrix, dei Deep Purple di Glenn Hughes e Tommy Bolin. E il robusto albero che poggia su queste radici, ci regala - nella forma di canzoni - frutti dal gusto pregiato: assaggiateli, non ve ne stancherete facilmente.

Un po' troppo ottimisticamente etichettati come "il futuro del rock", esordiscono sulla lunga distanza gli Alberta Cross, inglesi d'estrazione ma oramai americani di adozione che danno così un seguito al buon mini d'esordio uscito un paio di anni or sono.

Adottati musicalmente da Dave Matthews e dalla sua ATO Records che pubblica questo "Broken Side Of Time", gli Alberta Cross si portano dietro un carico di aspettative forse eccessivo: va bene l'ottimismo, ma caricare sulle spalle di una così giovane formazione un simile fardello rischia di essere controproducente. E sarebbe un vero peccato, perché, nel loro piccolo, gli Alberta Cross non sono affatto male. Il loro rock di stampo classico che spesso e volentieri mostra guizzi alternative e discese blues si lascia apprezzare nonostante le non particolarmente spiccate doti di originalità, ed a patto di entrare in sintonia con l'approccio vocale di Petter Ericson Stakee, un cantante le cui tonalità si muovono su coordinate piuttosto elevate. Dovendo azzardare un paragone, provate a pensare ad un'improbabile mix di Perry Farrell (Jane's Addicition), Andrew Stockdale (Wolfmother) e Cedric Bixler-Zavala (Mars Volta).

Nel complesso il disco risulta piacevole da ascoltare, i dieci brani di cui si compone pur non evidenziando grandi picchi si mantengono su livelli qualitativi più che accettabili, ma risulta presto chiaro che i cinque raggiungono il massimo dell'efficacia quando spingono sull'acceleratore: le chitarre prendono il sopravvento, i toni si fanno più cupi  ed il carattere della band inizia ad assumere una propria identità. Mettiamola in questi termini: se i Kings Of Leon avessero un lato oscuro, molto probabilmente suonerebbero esattamente così.
