Moon And Stars is an event that is held since 2004 in the picturesque Piazza Grande in Locarno, a few dozen meters from Lake Maggiore. Each year, many artists of international status come here and for two weeks Locarno becomes a city of music (and not a single inhabitant of the town collect signatures against these concerts) and this year, the evening with Toto and Earth Wind & Fire co-headlining is undoubtedly the most meaty to me.

"Boogie Wonderland" opens literally the dance with the twelve Earth, Wind & Fire musicians playing wild and ready to rock the crowd. Funky and 70s disco hits follow one another almost without a pause, the set is composed by a compilation of their most famous songs: "September", "Fantasy", "After The Love Has Gone" and "Sing A Song" among others.
One hour and twenty-five minutes of great fun offered by an ensemble of unexceptionable and vocally resounding musicians. Thinking that some of them are now in their sixties is truly incredible.

After a twenty minute break, it comes the moment I eagerly awaited for. I have attended several Toto concerts but I never had the chance to see Joseph Williams with them, the singer of "The Seventh One" (and "Fahrenheit"), the record that made me discover them when I was a boy and that is within my ten desert island cds.
The circumstances, unfortunately, are not happy, since this temporary reunion and the short European tour are organized to honor the historic bass player Mike Porcaro who contracted Lou Gehrig's disease, also known as ALS.
Legendary bassist Nathan East, known for having played with Phil Collins and Eric Clapton among others, has been called to stand in for Mike in this tour.

The band strikes up with the epic and pompous instrumental "Child's Anthem" and we are soon able to catch the excellent shape of the musicians and their desire to become a single entity with the crowd, with Steve Lukather who demands and urge the audience's chorus. After the instrumental introduction, here comes Joseph Williams on stage and since the first vocalizations of "Till The End" the impression is that this will be a great night indeed, his throat is in good shape. The harmony between the various members of the band is palpable and seeing for the first time on stage Steve Porcaro and Joseph Williams was really exciting for me.
Luke is histrionic as always, David Paich is a scene stealer when he does not "hide" behind the keys and a true maestro when he plays, the groove imposed from East and veteran Simon Phillips is pure passion and I should also mention the great voices of the two back-up vocalists Jory Steinberg and Mabvuto Carpenter.
The long instrumental parts performed during the last tours are not played except for a short keyboards solo; maybe because of the short setlist but this time the songs are at the core of the show: "Pamela", "Home Of The Brave", "Georgy Porgy" (with the intro "stolen" from EWF's "Can't Hide Love" and to them dedicated by Luke), "Stop Loving You".
The setlist covers only the first ten years of Toto career, with songs pulled out from the 1978 debut album to the 1988 "The Seventh One"; if I have to complain about something, I have to say that I would have liked a few more songs from Williams' two records even if some classic should have been dropped. "Only The Children", "Straight For The Heart" or "Could This Be Love" would have been perfect for me.

In the next months a DVD should be released with the whole concert held in Copenhagen a few days later, I recommend the purchase to all the fans who could not reach Locarno.

A last thought goes to the great Mike Porcaro, a player who gave Toto so much both on stage and live.

Moon And Stars è una manifestazione che da sei anni si tiene nella caratteristica e centralissima Piazza Grande di Locarno a poche decine di metri dal Lago Maggiore. Ogni anno passano di qui artisti di caratura internazionale e per due settimane Locarno diventa città della musica (senza che nessun abitante della cittadina raccolga firme anti-concerti e proteste varie) e quest'anno, la serata da co-headliner di Toto ed Earth, Wind & Fire è senza dubbio la più succosa, per me.

Le note di "Boogie Wonderland" aprono letteralmente le danze con i dodici musicisti degli Earth, Wind & Fire scatenati e pronti a loro volta a far scatenare la folla. Hit funky e disco anni '70 si susseguono praticamente senza sosta, una compilation delle loro canzoni più famose ha composto il set: "September", "Fantasy", "After The Love Has Gone" e "Sing A Song" tra le altre.
Un'ora e venticinque minuti di grande divertimento prodotto da un ensemble di musicisti ineccepibili e vocalmente strepitosi. Pensare che alcuni di loro sono ormai sulla sessantina è davvero incredibile.

Dopo una ventina di minuti di pausa arriva il momento da me tanto atteso. Ho assistito a diversi concerti dei Toto ma non avevo mai avuto l'occasione di vederli con Joseph Williams al microfono, il cantante di "The Seventh One" (e di "Fahrenheit"), il disco che me li ha fatti scoprire da ragazzino e che rientra nei miei dieci dischi da portare sull'isola deserta.
L'occasione, purtroppo, non è delle più felici, infatti questa temporanea reunion con relativo mini tour europeo sono stati organizzati in onore dello storico bassista Mike Porcaro il quale ha contratto il morbo di Lou Gehrig, tristemente noto anche come SLA.
Al posto di Mike è stato chiamato un altro leggendario bassista, Nathan East, noto per avere suonato con Phil Collins ed Eric Clapton tra gli altri.

La band attacca con lo strumentale epico e pomposo di "Child's Anthem" e già traspare l'ottima forma dei musicisti e la loro voglia di diventare un'unica entità con il pubblico, con il leader Steve Lukather che chiama a gran voce il coro del pubblico. Finita l'introduzione strumentale, ecco salire sul palco Joseph Williams e fin dai primi vocalizzi di "Till The End" l'impressione è che questa sarà veramente una grande serata, la sua ugola pare in ottima forma. La sintonia tra i vari membri della band è palpabile e, per me, vedere per la prima volta sul palco Steve Porcaro e Joseph Williams è emozionante.
Luke è il solito istrione, David Paich mattatore quando esce dal "nascondiglio" delle tastiere ma maestro assoluto quando si cimenta allo strumento, il groove imposto da East e dal veterano Simon Phillips è passione allo stato puro e menzione va pure alle grandi voci dei due coristi Jory Steinberg e Mabvuto Carpenter.
I lunghi momenti strumentali a cui ci avevano abituato nelle ultime tournée non vengono eseguiti a parte un breve solo di tastiere; saranno i tempi "ristretti" ma, questa volta, sono le canzoni ad essere al centro dello show: "Pamela", "Home Of The Brave", "Georgy Porgy" (con tanto di citazione di "Can't Hide Love" degli EWF e loro dedicata da Luke), "Stop Loving You".
La scaletta copre solo i primi dieci anni di carriera dei Toto, con brani che vanno dall'omonimo disco d'esordio del 1978 fino a "The Seventh One" del 1988; se proprio devo lamentarmi di qualcosa, devo dire che avrei preferito qualche canzone in più dai due dischi di Williams anche a discapito, eventualmente, di qualche classico. "Only The Children", "Straight For The Heart" o "Could This Be Love" ci sarebbero state proprio bene.

Nei prossimi mesi dovrebbe uscire il DVD del concerto tenuto a Copenhagen qualche giorno dopo, consiglio l'acquisto a tutti i fan che non hanno potuto raggiungere Locarno.

Un ultimo pensiero va sicuramente a un grande come Mike Porcaro che tanto ha dato sul palco e in studio a una band storica come quella dei Toto.

They're back!
Back after a six years and back for the second time in Italy in few months.
Finally, I add.
I have always appreciated The Cranberries and I have always believed that, after all, they were only the support band for Dolores, frontwoman and outstanding singer. Instead, after two anonymous solo album released by the thirty-nine year-old singer, I had to change my mind. Evidently, the mixture and magic between Dolores, the Hogan brothers and Fergal Lawler is such that every single member is essential for the band.

Under the burning sun of one of this summer's hottest days, at 19.30 the four Irish musicians come on stage. The Cranberries is the second main band of the first day of the Heineken Jammin' Festival 2010.
Although they have been very recently in Italy, although they should have performed three other dates (in a few days will play in Rome, Perugia and Turin, the last two concerts have been cancelled due to Dolores' illness) and, above all, despite they have to play before giants like Aerosmith, who are not playing in Italy since many years, there are many fans for them. And those fans were right, because we enjoyed a memorable concert.

In the past I've seen tv live performances by Dolores and not always she sang well like she is able to do in the studio, but this time she sang divinely, managing to carry on stage all the energy and pathos contained in the studio albums. She interacted with the audience between songs having a high time, even suffering the hot and oppressive sky of Mestre like us in the audience.
The stage was obviously her own but, as already explained, the chemistry between the four guys (plus multi-instrumentalist Denny DeMarchi, who already worked with his brother Steve, with Alias and Dolores) made it even more energetic and magical.
All the band's career was taken into consideration with songs from all five albums plus two songs taken from the singer's solo albums.
So many are the hits that thrilled the twenty thousand people in the crowd, but euphoria reached the highest peak with the conclusive "Dreams" and especially with the classic song "Zombie" which, despite of its lyrics that tells of wars and deaths, was able to trigger a happy and entranced audience. How good not to speak English!

The Cranberries proved on stage that they're back at the top, now we only have to wait and hope that the same miracle will be recreated in the studio.. maybe for a long time.

Sono tornati!
Tornati dopo una pausa durata ben sei anni e tornati per la seconda volta in Italia nel giro di pochissimi mesi.
Finalmente, aggiungo.
Da sempre apprezzo i Cranberries e ho sempre creduto che, in fondo, fossero solo la band di supporto a Dolores, frontwoman e singer d'eccezione. Invece, dopo due anonimi solo album della cantante trentanovenne, mi sono dovuto ricredere. Evidentemente, l'amalgama e la magia tra Dolores, i fratelli Hogan e Fergal Lawler sono tali da rendere indispensabile la presenza di ognuno nella band.

Sotto il sole cocente di uno dei giorni più caldi di questo inizio estate, ecco che alle 19.30 si presentano sul palco i quattro irlandesi. The Cranberries è la seconda main band della prima giornata dell'Heineken Jammin' Festival 2010.
Pur essendo passati da poco sul suolo italico, pur avendo altre tre date in cui esibirsi (in pochi giorni suoneranno a Roma, Perugia e Torino, queste ultime due date poi annullate per una malattia di Dolores) e, soprattutto, pur trovandosi a dover suonare prima di giganti come gli Aerosmith, i quali non suonano in Italia da tempo immemore, sono in molti i fan presenti. E hanno fatto bene ad accorrere, perché abbiamo goduto di un concerto memorabile.

In passato mi è capitato di vedere in tv delle esibizioni live di Dolores non proprio all'altezza di ciò che riesce a fare in studio ma questa volta ha cantato divinamente, riuscendo a trasportare sul palco tutta l'energia e il pathos contenuti negli album in studio. Ha dialogato con il pubblico tra un brano e l'altro e non ha smesso di scatenarsi nemmeno per un attimo, pur soffrendo il caldo e afoso cielo mestrino come noi tra il pubblico; infine, ha addirittura sfoggiato un cambio d'abito come nella più classica tradizione sanremese.
La scena era ovviamente tutta sua ma, come già spiegato, l'alchimia tra i quattro (più il polistrumentista Denny DeMarchi già collaboratore, insieme al fratello Steve, di Alias e della Dolores solista) ha reso tutto ancora più energico e magico.
Tutta la carriera della band è stata presa in considerazione con brani presi da tutti e cinque gli album più due canzoni tratte dagli album solisti della cantante.
Tante le hit che hanno appassionato i circa ventimila presenti ma i momenti di massima esaltazione si sono raggiunti con la conclusiva "Dreams" e soprattutto con la ormai classica "Zombie" che, pur avendo un testo che narra di guerre e morti, è stata in grado di far scatenare gaiamente un pubblico felice e rapito. Bello non sapere l'inglese!

Dal vivo hanno sicuramente dimostrato che il loro come back ha un alto valore artistico, ora non ci resta che attendere e sperare che lo stesso prodigio venga ricreato in studio…magari per lungo tempo.

A Collegno, una delle tante "cittadine dormitorio" che circondano la cintura torinese si svolge una rassegna estiva che di anno in anno annovera sempre più "attrazioni musicali" di un certo livello (ricordiamo ancora con molto piacere l'apertura del festival 2009 di Lenny Kravitz) e quest'anno il compito di aprire le danze spetta agli ALICE IN CHAINS che non hanno certo bisogno di presentazioni. Non si può dire che fosse presente il pubblico delle grandi occasioni, ma certamente l'attesa di vedere all'opera la band di Seattle dopo la pubblicazione del superfluo "Black Gives Way To Blue" dello scorso anno era abbastanza elevata tra il pubblico accorso per questo evento. C'era da tastare il polso ad una band che in passato è riuscita a scrivere degli autentici must in campo grunge rock, e c'era l'estrema curiosità di vedere dal vivo quanto il nuovo vocalist William DuVall si fosse effettivamente integrato con il sound della band. Nonostante la pioggia a tratti battente che ha imperversato per tutta la durata del concerto, la gente ha dimostrato gradire una prova molto positiva dove Jerry Cantrell ha dimostrato come oggi gli Alice In Chains siano sempre più la sua band avendo al suo fianco dei comprimari di lusso come Mike Inez (basso) e Sean Kinney (batteria) che si sono dimostrati base ritmica solida e precisa. Cantrell si è distinto per un lavoro chitarristico mostruoso curando totalmente sia la parte ritmica che quella solista con suoni corposi e pieni, pieni di grinta ed energia: proprio a tal proposito bisogna annotare purtroppo il suono totalmente impastato chitarra/basso, complice l'accordatura abbassata di un tono della chitarra il suono del basso di Inez si confondeva totalmente con le sfuriate del buon Cantrell, rendendo perfettamente inudibile il lavoro di Inez. Altra nota stonata della serata è stato il vedere Cantrell prodigarsi anche in moltissime parti vocali, molte delle quali soliste facendo sorgere una domanda: ma allora perchè chiamare DuVall dietro al microfono?

Il vocalist si dava da fare, si è dannato l'anima per tutta la durata del concerto ma a volte sembrava quasi relegato al ruolo di semplice corista, francamente questa scelta mi ha lasciato alquanto perplesso. Al di là di questo, nel suo complesso è stato un concerto dalla scaletta devastante, una serie di canzoni prese a man bassa dalla loro produzione migliore tratta da dischi seminali come "Facelift" e "Dirt" oltre che dall'ep "Jar Of Flies": "Dam That River", "Angry Chair", "No Excuses", "Them Bones", "Would?" tralasciando curiosamente la produzione di "Alice In Chains" del 1996 ad eccezione di "Again". Fin dall'iniziale "Rain When I Die" si è capito come sarebbe andata la serata, fino ad arrivare al vero proprio delirio per brani come "Them Bones" / "Would?" / "Man In The Box", guarda caso prodotti dal loro più vecchio catalogo come "Dirt" e "Facelift". Lo show del quartetto ha avuto un momento di flessione proprio in concomitanza (sarà un caso?) con l'esecuzione del materiale tratto dal nuovo album, praticamente da "A Looking In View" fino ad "Acid Bubble" dove sia la band che il pubblico sembrava essersi addormentato. Nel complesso bisogna ammettere che i ragazzi posseggono un talento fuori dal comune, sanno come far divertire il proprio pubblico grazie anche ad alcuni brani che sono ormai di diritto entrati nella storia del rock....imperdibili!

London is always worth a visit, even more when Bon Jovi play there. Needless to conceal that I’m talking about one of the bands I love most, but I believe I am impartial saying that a show of this New Jersey band fully pay back the cost of the ticket.
Of course, if you are also that lucky to meet Jon Bon Jovi, Hugh McDonald and Bobby Bandiera in the city, it adds that extra value that allowed me to keep myself calm when I heard the announcement that the return flight would have suffered a three hours delay.

The O2 Arena, completed in 2007, is a perfect venue for concerts, it’s got nothing to do with Italian venues: it is a real business park with dozens of restaurants, bars and even the British Music Experience, a museum dedicated to the history of music in the United Kingdom. Unfortunately there is no time to visit it, then I head to the arena soon. The seats are not the best, in the first row of the fourth level, but are perfect for me to assess the magnitude of the place, so that I needed a few minutes to get used to the height.

The special guest, which started playing some thirty minutes earlier, is a London based band with one album released in 2009. They are called New Device and play a hard rock with a good strong dose of melody. They are really good live and special mention goes to the singer's voice, Daniel Leigh, who has not lost a single note. In their half an hour New Device rocked the crowd and performed the best songs from their CD "Takin 'Over", including the title track, "In The Fading Light" and "Seven Nights, Seven Bodies".

After the break, at 8 PM the lights go down and so also Bon Jovi, inexplicably, start playing thirty minutes early, thus some friends (and several other people) that were stuck in London’s traffic jam lost the first four songs.
The opening of the fifth (out of twelve) evening as O2 "residency artist" is not the best: "Last Man Standing" is a song I really like but it has never satisfied me live, I find that it lacks of power.
With the next "We Were not Born To Follow", the six musicians make up immediately, properly warming the audience that finally explodes with the classic "You Give Love A Bad Name" belt out by about twenty thousand spectators.
The line-up on stage is atypical today, in fact keyboardist David Bryan is not present: just good news for him that had to flew to New York to pick up four Tony Awards won with his musical "Memphis". His substitute is the excellent Jeff Kazee, keyboardist for Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes and former member of the "Have A Nice Day" Bon Jovi tour.
Moreover, for the second consecutive tour Bobby Bandiera (also from Southside Johnny band) is on the second guitar.
The setlist does not satisfy everybody in the crowd but Bon Jovi have written so many hit songs that is hard to please everyone, but the absence of songs like "Have A Nice Day", "I'll Be There For You," "Just Older" or "Runaway" is felt.
Sure, compared to what they stated before the beginning of "The Circle" tour (that they would have performed many songs long time out of the set-list), there were any big surprise.
The set runs through hits both old and new, keeping the audience warm and enraptured and when it’s the turn of the classic "Bad Medicine", there is the first moment of glory for Bobby Bandiera who is called to center stage to perform "Oh, Pretty Woman" which takes the place of the historic "Shout" but that does not withstand the comparison because it is totally unrelated to the Bon Jovi hit. I wonder why they should necessarily play it mixed with another song!
Richie Sambora finally takes the spotlight for the next "Lay Your Hands On Me", sung with his bluesy voice to give Jon a few minutes of breathing. When he returns to the stage, goes to a smaller stage central to the pit to sing "(You Want To) Make A Memory" and "Bed Of Roses". Then, joined by Richie, Tico and Jeff, shows a more intimate and acoustic side of the band with "Something For The Pain" and "Someday I'll Be Saturday Night".

From then on the show back to "normality" with Jon overacting and towering on stage, proving he is one of the best frontmen in years.
"Keep The Faith" concludes the regular part of the show and after a very few minutes the band took the stage to perform an explosive three songs: "In These Arms" (with guitar solo by Bobby), "Wanted Dead Or Alive "and" Livin 'On A Prayer ". The perfect ending to make us lose our voices!
Bon Jovi is in a good shape and Jon has performed well and cleaned, it seems that the more the years pass the more he’s able to sing good on stage.
My hope, you know, it never dies, is that next year they will extend the tour in Europe and, why not, in Italy, where the last two concerts, Padua 2001 and Imola 2003, left a bitter taste to several fans.
