Rising star: TALKER Tuesday, 13 November 2018 23:52 by madseason
talker - Intimidated

Originally from Folsom, California, Celeste Tauchar started her musical project, "talker" just one year ago. Now at the youthful age of 23, Tauchar is already an accomplished artist. After earning a spot as a finalist in the highly competitive "Guitar Center Songwriter 5" competition, Tauchar performed at a concert headlined by City and Colour. Since then, she's played a number of shows with artists such as HOLYCHILD, Dan Sadin Colver, and  has extensive experience touring as a touring member of FRENSHIP.

Building on the stepping-stones placed by past grunge artists like Nirvana and Soundgarden, talker continues to innovate the genre of grunge-pop with her new single, Intimidated.

Showcasing a softer, more intimate style for this grunge-oriented artist, Intimidated begins with a beautiful acoustic introduction complimented by powerful, yet gentle, vocals. On top of the impressive vocal performance, the song's lyrics are a vulnerable confession about the struggles of feeling overwhelmed by failure. From the ballad-like introduction, to the head banging closing chorus, Intimidated is an emotional rollercoaster that can be, at times, eerily relatable.

While discussing Intimidated, talker details the process of creating what she considers to be her favorite piece of work; "Because I wasn't trying to write an amazing song, and was just trying to get my emotions out and help myself feel better, it ended up being really vulnerable and honest, and I think it's really relatable."

Written by talker, Intimidated was produced by Danny Schnair, who also played electric guitar, mixed by Jesse Ernster and mastered by Dave Harris. In the performance itself, talker provides vocals, acoustic guitar, and bass on the track, and percussionist Jake Reed plays the drums.

Intimidated is now available to stream and download on digital music platforms worldwide.
Stay tuned for news about a full EP release in the coming months.

COYOTE CHOIR unleash debut album Volume 1 Tuesday, 6 November 2018 20:49 by madseason
Coyote Choir on NoiseTrade

Coyote Choir is an American three-piece rock band featuring brothers Jason and Paul Watkins (vocals and bass respectively) and Mathew Linton, a veteran drummer on the Nashville music scene.

Coyote Choir independently released their debut full-length album Volume 1, last Friday, November 2.

A multi-generational mix of road-worthy influences found their way into the music of Coyote Choir, from contemporaries like Brandon Flowers and The War On Drugs to the Traveling Wilburys and Dire Straits.

The writing sessions for the album took long detours into discussions of old movies and 80's sitcoms. "There was no pressure to do anything - just this joy of connecting over all these things we love" recalls Jason Watkins. It seemed as though every new inspiration the band bonded over reminded them to pause and to reconnect with the loves that shaped them. To remember.

With their resulting debut, Volume 1, the band and producer/multi-instrumentalist Joe Causey have crafted a sound at once new and familiar. It's a savvy blend of dazzling programming and production, vintage synthesizers, and jangly, Heartbreakers-inspired guitar.

Thanks to NoiseTrade, you can stream/download 4 tracks off Volume 1 for free: just click on the image to be redirected to the NT page. For the whole thing, head over to iTunes or Spotify.

Royal Tusk - Aftermath

Canadian rockers Royal Tusk released their sophomore album Tusk II last October 26.

Tusk II was recorded in Toronto with producer Eric Ratz (Big Wreck, Billy Talent, Arkells) and is the first released on Entertainment One (eOne), with which the band signed a worldwide deal.

Tusk II includes the leading single Aftermath, a strong, hard hitting song that "was inspired by the idea that our culture (especially youth culture) is being desensitized to violence through an overload of media and information" in the words of vocalist Daniel Carriere. "While wrestling with ideas of isolation, violence, tragedy, and authoritarianism, Aftermath asks what we may see looking back when this ever-volatile present has become a distant memory."

Tusk II is a powerful collection of songs driven by loud guitars, a touch heavier than Royal Tusk's debut, highly enjoyable nonetheless.

ARKELLS call for connection on brand new album Tuesday, 30 October 2018 21:18 by madseason
Arkells - Relentless

Canadian indie pop-rockers Arkells released their new, fifth studio album, last October 19 via Last Gang Records - Universal Music Canada.

Titled Rally Cry, it was produced by JUNO Award winning producer Eric Ratz (Big Wreck, Billy Talent, The Tea Party), mixed by legendary sound-wiz Mark Needham (Blue October, The Killers, Imagine Dragons) and mastered by veteran mastering engineer Greg Calbi (John Mayer, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan).

"We made Rally Cry in the midst of touring our last record, with our live show fresh in our minds each time we entered the studio" guitarist Mike DeAngelis said. "On Rally Cry, there's an urgency to recording these songs and hearing them back. It's our sharpest and most concentrated effort yet," frontman Max Kerman added. "Rally Cry is the idea of a communal heart, a connected spirit. Whether it's political songs or love songs, they share the same starting place."

Official statements aside, Rally Cry is another top notch effort showcasing a superior songwriting skill: how many acts out there can write modern-dressed, '70s influenced pop-rock songs with meaningful lyrics of this level?

Jake Fields - The Other Side Of Waiting

Jake Fields is a Los Angeles & Nashville based singer/songwriter and guitar player.

For Jake Fields, all it took was $70 and a thrift store visit to drop professional baseball aspirations to dedicate his life to music. What Fields got in return was a guitar, amplifier, and an unrelenting dream to become a professional musician. After falling deeply in love with songwriting and performing, Jake Fields decided to focus his ambition towards becoming a full-time musician and eventually releasing an EP of original tracks.

Today, those ambitious goals have become his reality. Fields has recently teamed up with established producer Jim McGorman (Avril Lavigne, Weezer, Marc Broussard) to record his first EP, Someday You'll Be Mine, which is expected to drop in early 2019.

The Other Side Of Waiting is the title of Jake Fields' new single, released today and produced and co-written by McGorman: from the driving guitar that's reminiscent of early 2000s pop-rock, to the energetic vocals that have become a staple of modern pop, this release showcases Fields' innate ability to deconstruct genres and reshape them into his own unique sound.

The Other Side Of Waiting is a solid, anthemic and addictive song that should appeal to fans of powerpop bands like Until June, Rooney, Mêlée or The Feeling.

MAEFIRE: pop rock brilliance! Tuesday, 23 October 2018 20:46 by madseason
Maefire - Baby, Please

Maefire is a brilliant modern pop-rock band from Melbourne, Australia, featuring David Scammell on vocals, Cameron Leigh Eaton and Dave Tran on guitar and Geoffrey Mark Taylor on bass.

Maefire independently released their debut album I Am Not Afraid Of The Dark last September 20: produced by Samuel K Sproull (The Getaway Plan, Villainy) and engineered by Jon Grace, it was recorded at Homesurgery Recordings in Melbourne with Nicholas Andrew handling the drum duties.

I Am Not Afraid Of The Dark is an album for lovers of fresh, energetic, catchy pop rock songs, rich in tone and texture, finely crafted and professionaly delivered.

I can hear similarities with Finnish band The Rasmus in their heyday, with traces of Aussie acts Invertigo and, why not, Savage Garden.

All in all, a safe buy for infectious pop rock addicted: stream the album on Spotify and watch the video for the leading single Baby, Please clicking on the image.

Bad-ass new album for MODERN SPACE Friday, 19 October 2018 21:18 by madseason
Modern Space - Flip For It

Flip For It is the title of the new album from Newmarket, Ontario, infectious indie pop band Modern Space.
Released last September 14 on WEA, it immediately marks a great leap forward from the tenderfoot songs they laid out on 2016's Before Sunrise. Channelling influences such as The Vaccines and The Strokes – whose song The Modern Age inspired the first half of the band's name – Modern Space have returned with a new album that beams with a newfound assuredness.

Each and every one of the cuts feels ready for heavy A-list rotation – from A Small Pocket, a song the Strokes will wish they'd written a decade ago, to the soon-to-be massive sing-along anthem that is Just Quit, to the sleek, Motown throwback of the title track, Flip For It is a case of all killer, no filler.

For frontman Sean Graham, however, this move forward has all been the result of him reaching a new level of maturity. "The biggest difference is that I've grown up in that time [between records]," he explains. "I got to travel, so a lot of it was written outside of Toronto. I was still young when we made Before Sunrise. I was only 21 when I wrote it. Now I'm 25. This record is more just about drinking, meeting people, being outrageous and having fun. It's faster. It's louder. It's a bit more bad-ass."

And it's a joy to listen to: buy/stream at all the major outlets out there and watch the video for the title-track clicking on the image.
