This coming july Fair To Midland will return with a new album, "Arrows & Anchors": produced by famous knobsmaster Joe Barresi (Queens of the Stone Age, Weezer, Coheed and Cambria, Tool, Bad Religion, Backyard Babies, Pearl) and featuring 15 tracks, A&A it's going to be released by E1 Music label on July 12th.

Pearl Aday, though unknown to the general public, is surely not unprepared for the world of rock: we are indeed talking about the wife of Scott Ian (guitarist for Anthrax and now also for Pearl) and, at the same time, daughter of Michael Lee Aday, mostly known as Meat Loaf, for which she has toured the world as a backing vocalist for nine years.
In spite of kinship (even if both are not biological), the blonde Pearl is not influenced by the style of any of them.
Since the album cover is easy to guess her love for the 70s and for Janis Joplin (her biological father played drums for Janis Joplin and from her he stole the nickname Pearl for his daughter). So, we are talking about hard blues rock with trace of southern rock (outstanding are the autobiographical "Rock Child" and "Broken White"), sung by a rocker with balls who is not ashamed to show her female side in sweet ballads such as "My Heart Isn’t In It" and "Anything".
Pearl, with her scathing and gritty voice, is rightly the protagonist of the album, but the powerful and precise rhythm section and the two aggressive guitars certainly do not stand in the background.
All together, they create captivating songs that are sure going to be appreciated by anyone who grew up on AC/DC, Ted Nugent, Aerosmith and all the heroes of the '70s.

Pearl Aday, per quanto sconosciuta al grande pubblico, non è certo una sprovveduta nel mondo del rock: stiamo parlando infatti della moglie di Scott Ian, chitarrista di Anthrax e ora anche di Pearl, e figlia di Michael Lee Aday, noto ai più come Meat Loaf, per il quale, per ben nove anni, ha girato il mondo come corista.
A dispetto delle parentele (anche se entrambe non sono biologiche), la bionda Pearl non è influenzata dallo stile di nessuno di essi.
Fin dalla copertina dell'album è intuibile l'amore per i 70s e per una certa Janis Joplin (per cui il papà biologico della Aday suonò la batteria e da cui rubò il nomignolo Pearl per la figlia). Stiamo parlando quindi di un rock blues con venature sudiste e piuttosto hard (strepitose l'autobiografica "Rock Child" e "Broken White"), cantato da una rocker con le palle ma che non si vergogna di mostrare il lato più femminile in dolci ballad quali "My Heart Isn't In It" e "Anything".
Pearl, con la sua voce graffiante e grintosa, è giustamente la protagonista del disco, ma la sezione ritmica possente e precisa e le due aggressive chitarre non sono certo in secondo piano.
Tutto l'insieme crea canzoni coinvolgenti che saranno sicuramente apprezzate da chiunque sia cresciuto a pane ed AC/DC, Ted Nugent, Aerosmith e tutti gli eroi degli anni '70.

Più che di concept album, è il caso di parlare di concept discography: siamo infatti arrivati al quinto capitolo delle "Amory Wars", anche se a tutti gli effetti "Year Of The Rainbow" ne rappresenta il prequel.

Con la consumata abilità di chi ha preso fin troppa confidenza con il genere che propone, Claudione Sanchez trasfonde in questo ennesimo concept album un pò tutte le peculiarità che hanno reso unico il sound della band.[preview] Le tonalità emo che spiccavano nei primi lavori si amalgamano piacevolmente con la vena progressiva evidenziata in tempi più recenti, dando vita ad un disco ambiguo, a volte ridondante ma in ogni caso sempre, inconfondibilmente Co&Ca. Il primo impatto potrebbe non trasmettervi sensazioni positive, ma l'apprezzamento cresce con il ripetuto ascolto. Non siamo comunque di fronte al capolavoro della band, questo è poco ma sicuro. Sugli scudi il drumming ad assetto variabile  di Chris Pennie (ex-Dillinger Escape Plan), e quella manciata di brani in cui, premendo sull'acceleratore, la band riesce davvero a brillare.
In uscita anche una versione de-luxe superaccessoriata, che oltre al cd offre un bonus dvd ed il romanzo (352 pagine!) scritto da Sanchez insieme a Peter David che con l'album condivide titolo e tematiche.

Prendete un genere musicale. Pensate alla sua evoluzione. Prendete dei musicisti cresciuti in un determinato contesto cimentarsi con un genere completamente nuovo per i loro canoni. Lo sforzo creativo li porterà, quasi sicuramente, a generare qualcosa di ben più avvincente, e perchè no originale, anche rispetto a chi quel determinato genere lo suona da decenni!

Vi spiego meglio. Audrey Horne (do you remember Twin Peaks?) anno 2005, band di origine norvegese, primo disco, "No Hay Banda". Clamoroso esempio di come fondere l'alternative rock/metal e il crossover anni novanta di band come Alice In Chains, Faith No More e primi Tool, il tutto confezionato, sorpresa, da musicisti di estrazione black/death metal (ex membri di Gorgoroth e Enslaved per la cronaca)!

Dopo la replica a titolo "Le Fol", il terzo self title album di questi ragazzacci di Berger spinge il loro alternative metal verso un hard rock di stampo seventies, intenso e drammatico nell'incendere, avallato dalla produzione dell'esperto Joe Barresi (Queen Of The Stone Age, Kyuss, Fu Manchu, Tomahawk). L'evoluzione non è molto distante da quanto fatto in passato dagli Amorphis di "Tuonela" e "Am Universum", o forse il paragone più calzante è quello di altri ex black/death metallers approdati in territori più classici, ossia i connazionali Green Carnation.

Persistono retaggi metal, ruffiani quanto efficaci a livello esecutivo, ma il fulcro su cui girano "Circus", "Sail Away", i chiaroscuri della stupenda "Down Like Suicide", la vorticosa "Blaze Of Ashes" e l'atmosfere plumbee di "Firehose", è un dinamico hard rock anni settanta dal piglio moderno, scolpito con l'utilizzo massiccio di un minaccioso hammond.

Non c'è che dire, gli Audrey Horne sono riusciti nell'impresa di ripulire il flusso sonoro incontrollato delle loro origini estreme e coinvogliarlo in un sound moderno ma allo stesso tempo classicamente rock, adulto e altamente descrittivo.

PS: Nella limited edition troverete 4 brani acustici e due cover: "Nowhere To Run" dei Kiss, e addirittura "Halo" di Beyonce, in una versione tombale per solo piano e voce (!)
