I'm a little late on this. Time to make amends as these five guys from Dallas, Texas, delivered one of the best EPs of the year so far.

Sunsleep was formed on January 1st of 2017 and consists of five members: Devin Barrus (vocals), Miles Croney (guitar), Lance Nerio (guitar), Dylan Woods (bass), and Mason Croney (drums).

The band was originally formed as a studio writing project but after the release of their debut single, Fever, the band quickly turned into what we know of it today.

As musicians they're looking to push the boundaries between an aggressive rock sound fused with ambient pop melodies and catchy choruses. And they're reaching their goal, judging from their debut EP, I Hope To See Again With Brand New Eyes, released last September 7 (Manifest Group) and produced and mixed by excellent producer Erik Ron (Dance Gavin Dance, Slaves, Godsmack).

I Hope To See Again With Brand New Eyes features 5 brilliant and emotional alternative pop rock songs crafted with the expertise of an established act.

And this is just the beginning: with a little luck and some wise management, I feel Sunsleep will be huge soon.

Prima di andare a sviscerare ogni singolo aspetto di questo “Picture Perfect” devo farvi una confessione: adoro questo album! Originari di Philadelphia, il quintetto statunitense nel 2007 si cimenta con la prima produzione discografica autoprodotta con la quale comincia a far parlare di sé nel South New Jersey facendosi notare dalla Phase One Communication, la quale li affida alle cure di Jim Wirt (No Doubt, Incubus, Live) per produrre questo che può essere considerato quasi come il loro debut album. E tanta fiducia, una volta tanto, non è stata mal riposta da parte dell'etichetta poiché in “Picture Perfect” possiamo trovare 12 godibilissimi brani nei quali l'ascoltatore potrà trovare pane per i suoi denti, passando attraverso meravigliose ballate e veri e propri attacchi sonori dove le chitarre del duo Canova/Moczydlowski si divertono a tessere alcune interessanti trame sulle quali spicca la voce di Jonny Sitar. Riuscire ad emergere nella miriade di bands modern rock che oggi giorno impazzano nel panorama musicale è molto difficile, ma i Dive posseggono un gusto per la melodia che li porta certamente sopra la media. Certo non possiamo parlare di sound originale e privo di sbavature, ma chi può fregiarsi il vanto di essere band totalmente innovativa? Anche se si tratta in alcuni casi di un sound derivativo da altri mostri sacri del genere, questa band le elabora a modo suo per un lavoro fresco a divertente dall'inizio alla fine. Da segnalare l'utilizzo del sax in ballate come “Teenage Tragedy” e “The Other Side Of me” che rende l'atmosfera ancora più rarefatta e sognante impreziosendo 2 ballate da brivido. Molti i brani degni di nota, fortunatamente ci troviamo di fronte solamente ad un paio di pezzi cosiddetti “riempitivi” di cui avremmo fatto volentieri a meno come “Wait For Me” o “Remember” (“curiosamente” inseriti nel finale) ma questi “peccati veniali” sono probabilmente il frutto dell'inesperienza che non inficia il brillante risultato finale.
