Dream The Electric Sleep - Flight

Dream The Electric Sleep are a progressive, concept-rock band from Lexington, KY. Although primarily rooted in progressive rock, the band employs elements of classical, folk, '70s AOR, '80s darkwave and shoegaze.

The band formed in 2009 and debuted in 2011 with the self-produced debut concept LP, Lost And Gone Forever, that received international critical acclaim.

The second album, Heretics, was released in February 2014, and received an overwhelmingly positive response from critics and fans alike.

It's now the time for album number three, Beneath The Dark Wide Sky, released today, July 22, on Mutiny Records. Beneath The Dark Wide Sky was produced by Nick Raskulinecz (Rush, Foo Fighters, Alice In Chains and many more) and was recorded in July 2015 at Nick’s Rock Falcon Studio outside of Nashville, TN.

"The new album is a sonic departure for us in some ways," says vocalist/guitar player Matt Page, "though the record does continue the lyrical and conceptual thread of exploring the way historically significant social, economic, and environmental traumas echo throughout our contemporary narratives. For this album we did specifically draw inspiration from photographs taken of the Dust Bowl in the 1930s by American photographer Dorothea Lange. She believed photographs had the ability to shine an objective light on issues of social justice and environmental degradation and could be used to persuade and motivate social and political change. Much of what motivated Lange, also motivates me."

John The Ghost - Sour Grapes

John The Ghost is the moniker of The Maine's frontman John O'Callaghan new project. The debut 6-track EP was released last April 29; it's simply titled Sincerely, John The Ghost and it's a perfect listening for these lazy hot summer afternoons.

John The Ghost sounds like a simpler, stripped down version of The Maine, with acoustic instruments, gentle melodies and poetic lyrics.

I have a spot on the leading single off the EP, Sour Grapes, whose official video's been recently released (watch it clicking on the image), but all the EP is worth your attention. Stream it on Spotify, relax and enjoy!

Andy Wilson-Taylor is SON OF SIMON Monday, 18 July 2016 21:00 by madseason
Son Of Simon - Rivers / Pastures

Son Of Simon is the solo project from London based band Midgar's vocalist Andy Wilson-Taylor.

Since Midgar's most recent tour and album release, Andy has been focusing his attention towards composition for film and TV, writing music for an incredible variety of clients, including critically acclaimed independent films, huge companies like Coca Cola, McDonalds and Verizon, and more unusual endeavours such as the Platypus Institute. Andy also writes songs for other artists and is currently collaborating with dance music producers from all over the world. Putting all of that to one side, it was time for Andy to create music for his own passion once again.

Rivers / Pastures is the title of the debut album of the Son Of Simon project, and is a full length, split release comprising of two distinct parts, Rivers and Pastures.

Rivers was first imagined when Andy took to a two month trip to Asia in late 2015. Having none of his musical instruments to hand - and frustrated by the lack of a musical outlet - Andy bought a ukulele to travel with. What followed was a notepad full of songs written with the ukulele at the centre, backed by a dark, folk orchestra. Rivers tells the story of a man wishing to escape his stressful, modern life and connect with nature, only to be seduced by a dangerous siren who pulls him into the underworld.

Pastures moves into more familiar singer/songwriter territory and tells a more personal story.

The entire album, and all of its constituent parts were created by Andy, who wrote the music and lyrics, performed every part on the record, produced, mixed and mastered it and self-released it on all major digital platforms on July 11th. Give Rivers / Pastures a chance streaming it on Spotify!

Twin Atlantic - No Sleep

Scottish alternative rockers Twin Atlantic will release their fourth studio album next September 9 on Red Bull Records.

It's titled GLA, was written in Glasgow and recorded in Topanga Canyon, L.A., where the band worked with Jacknife Lee (R.E.M., Biffy Clyro, Snow Patrol) who had previously produced some tracks for the previous album Great DivideAlan Moulder (Arctic Monkeys, The Killers, Foo Fighters) handled the mixing duties to finalize the process.

Lead vocalist Sam McTrusty commented on GLA: "This is where we come from. It's laced in our blood not to mention our art and vision. It's bold. It's in our voice. It's time to embrace it and not work around it. This album is our reflection of what it's like to come from a city at the forefront of multiculturalism, both forward thinking and with a real sense of community, but also with a dark and rough history. We have changed our approach to writing and recording; we turned the idea of a rock band upside down, conforming only to this one idea - to take back rock and roll. To give people something real again. You can't get more real than Glasgow. Infamous for rivalry and danger. Passion and fear. Diversity and depth. Love and warmth. Small spaces and one climate. We have finally made the album we wanted to make."

The band has just released the video for their new single No Sleep: "It's a simple video. Us in our element. our natural environment. Just playing and reacting to the music. We didn't want to dilute the track with an elaborate visual. The textures projected behind and onto us were inspired by the album art we made for GLA. This is us. This is our music." MGT - Knowing Me Knowing You feat. Ville Valo

Mark Gemini Thwaite, known with his acronym MGT, is by no means a new kid in town: he's in the business since the early Eighties and has been the guitarist for a number of rock bands and artists over the last two decades, including The Mission, Tricky, Peter Murphy (of Bauhaus), National Velvet, plus various live and recorded appearances with Revolting Cocks, Gary Numan, Roger Daltrey, P.J. Harvey, Alanis Morissette, Ricky Warwick, Ginger of The Wildhearts, Ville Valo of HIM and many more.

What's new is Mark's debut solo album, Volumes, released worlwide through SPV Records. The album was mixed by no less than Tim Palmer (David Bowie, Robert Plant, Pearl Jam, U2, Ozzy, Blue October) and features a plethora of guest musicians, as Ville Valo, who sings on the leading single and cover of the Abba track Knowing Me Knowing You, Julianne Regan (of All About Eve), Ricky Warwick (The Almighty, Thin Lizzy), Miles Hunt (of The Wonder Stuff), Wayne Hussey (The Mission) to name a few.

Albums of guitar players tend to be self-indulgent: it's not the case of Volumes, as MGT put its skills at the service of the songs, creating a collection of emotional tracks, mixing amazing modern pop-rock music with goth atmospheres.

As examples, you can try the aforementioned Knowing Me Knowing You (click on the image to watch the video), or the new single You Can't Go Back (To Once Upon A Time) featuting Miles Hunt on vocals (watch the video here), or, maybe, The Reaping, with Ashton Nyte of The Awakening on vocals.

And, of course, you can always stream the whole album on Spotify to get the complete aural experience.

KAATO: classic rock for the modern age Monday, 11 July 2016 21:45 by madseason
KAATO - High Time

It's such a rarity nowadays finding out a band playing classic rock without looking like a bunch of old farts clumsily rehashing old sounds and melodies.

I'm happy to report that KAATO are one of these rare birds.

Fronted and founded by Australian rocker Kurt Lowney, KAATO came together in 2015 as Kurt began working with Nashville-based producer and veteran rocker Mitch Malloy to write and record the selftitled album. "From day one, the musical chemistry between Kurt and me was undeniable." says Malloy. Both had grown up listening to and savoring the same musical influences… only Mitch experienced his musical heroes as a kid in realtime and Kurt was introduced to the classics by his parents.

Kurt has harbored the dream of KAATO since he was a 16-year-old recording in post-earthquake Japan in 2011. The Japanese called him Kaato (pronounced Kah-toe), meaning Kurt. It was during this time KAATO became Kurt's performance persona and stage name.

Kurt and Mitch began recording the KAATO album in Nashville at Mitch's studio, Malloy Master Tracks. Kurt brought along his longtime friend and bass player, Mika Nuutinen, while Mitch brought in guitar virtuoso Tristan Avakian (remember him in Red Dawn?) for lead guitar and, once again, the musical chemistry was so undeniable that Tristan became part of KAATO.

KAATO's self titled album was released last July 1 via Nostalgia Media Group. It's a truly great, infectious rock record with elements of blues and funk, inspired by such heroes as Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, Boston, early Def Leppard, Black Crowes, Hanoi Rocks, written and played with personality and viridity.

Check the video for the single High Time clicking on the image and stream the whole full-length on Spotify. If you buy only one classic rock album this year, be sure it's KAATO!.

Modern Sci-Fi Rock with SHADOW HUNTERS Saturday, 9 July 2016 18:30 by madseason
Shadow Hunters - Avatar

I have to admit I'm a newbie when it comes to the music of Shadow Hunters, a rock duo formed by brothers Will and Ingar, hailing from the south west coast of Norway.

Shadow Hunters are influenced by 30 Seconds To Mars, Bring Me The Horizon, Foo Fighters, film scores and describe themselves as "Modern Energetic Sci-Fi Rock".

Their debut album is titled A V A T A R and was released yesterday, July 8, on Renegade Records. It was produced by Will and Ingar and is out on Spotify, so you can stream this very interesting record now and get an idea about this band.

And if you're into lyric videos, check the ones for the tracks Fire Will Be Free and Into Tomorrow's Yesterday.

Fight The Fade - Lanterns (In The Dark) (lyric)

Alternative rockers from Tulsa, Oklahoma, Fight The Fade, released last Friday, July 1, their third full-length release, fourth if we consider last year's Second Horizon Reimagined, a new version of their sophomore release Second Horizon from 2014.

The new album is simply titled Fight The Fade and showcases a further improvement in songwriting and overall musicianship.

Fight The Fade includes the new singles Falling (watch the official video here) and Lanterns (In The Dark). According to the band, "Lanterns (In The Dark) is a song written about taking a chance on someone you love, risking the comfort and security of the light to go bring them out of the darkness they've wandered into. Sometimes it's easy to isolate yourself and push away people that love you, but the love you share will always burn brighter than the darkness and pain of being alone."
