Ryan Malott must be the fruit born from the relationship between the most irriverent country singer-songwriter and the most cheeky punk singer, Mr. Johnny Cash and Fat Mike from NOFX. I cannot explain in any other way the origin of this talented guy, who is able to fuse effortlessly two genre of music so different like country and punk.

But the recipe of this band with such bastard beat is more elaborate, basically one might find many disparate kind of influences: from funky to power pop, from brit-pop to mariachi music.

Ryan is the singer and the only songwriter, moreover he also attended production with Dutch Erwin Musper (somebody may remember him working with Zinatra, Scorpions, Paul Laine and Def Leppard); the two made a lofty job, they have been able to give the fairest emphasis both to rock instruments and typical country instruments like lap steel and fiddle, so that none of them would have prevailed to the other.

Many are the tracks to be pointed out: "It's Alright" begins like if it was a NOFX song, then becomes a melancholic country melody and comes back again with hardcore breaks. The country & western & punk "Six Foot Hole" has a chorus that might be stolen from a recent Green Day song, while the irresistible funky rock "By Accident" could be welcomed by Big & Rich fans.

The rock'n'roll "Barfly" tells us stories of alcohol and drugs but you cannot resist to its easy-going melody; with "Shots" there is another furious hardcore riff, it is the background sound for a desperate quest for a liquor shop. "Lead Me On", oddly for the band, is a classic country ballad with no other particular influence. The long and epic "Everybody Needs An Enemy" alternates slow passages to uptempo beats until it brings us to the instrumental grand finale with the six guys from Cincinnati playing like a harder version of Coldplay.

500 Miles To Memphis, so called because 500 are the miles between Memphis and their hometown in Ohio, are entertaining; they have the power to make your day cheerful even if they tell you stories about alcohol, drugs and a few other crimes (well, their lyrics are not that easy).

Maybe they are not for everyone, but who is a little bit more open-minded must not be frightened by sounds that seem to be unrelated; just give a chance to this country punk gang.

Ecco un disco che non passerà inosservato. Un sound catchy senza essere oltremodo banale, un'attitudine che sprizza positività da tutti i pori, una buona tecnica individuale da parte dei 7 artisti, un songwriting fresco, che miscela manciate di stili differenti [preview]in un unico, esplosivo calderone di musica buona per tutte le occasioni: una giornata di lavoro, una serata di meditazione, una nottata infuocata su una pista da ballo.
Aggiungiamoci un cantante "vero", con uno stile vocale vibrante e appassionato, influenzato da grandi solisti dall'anima soul come Al Green e Steve Perry (certo, non siamo sullo stesso livello di questi eroi, ma ci si può comunque accontentare!). E quel quid di ruffianeria e sfrontatezza che permetterà alle "lingue di carta" di arrivare in alto nelle chart internazionali.
Se non siete tra coloro per cui il rock è buono solo se "duro e puro", provate i Paper Tongues.

La bella voce di Simona Cioccoloni è la caratteristica più peculiare di questa band, per quanto mai sfoggiata in maniera eccessiva.
La band dichiara di essere influenzata da gruppi quali Interpol o Franz Ferdinand ma, forse[preview] a causa della presenza di una voce femminile e di una costante melanconia di fondo molto british, i Rummer And Grapes mi ricordano i primissimi Cranberries (quelli dell’EP "Uncertain" tanto per intenderci), gli ormai scomparsi da tempo Curve o, per tornare su territorio italiano, i Soon.
Gli arrangiamenti sono molto curati anche se il missaggio non mi sembra sempre all’altezza, soprattutto nei pezzi più "elettrici" in cui la voce di Simona ogni tanto viene messa un po' troppo in secondo piano perdendo in dinamicità.
Se apprezzate il rock di stampo britannico con spruzzate di new wave qua e là, ascoltate i R&G, meritano tutta la vostra attenzione.

Più che di concept album, è il caso di parlare di concept discography: siamo infatti arrivati al quinto capitolo delle "Amory Wars", anche se a tutti gli effetti "Year Of The Rainbow" ne rappresenta il prequel.

Con la consumata abilità di chi ha preso fin troppa confidenza con il genere che propone, Claudione Sanchez trasfonde in questo ennesimo concept album un pò tutte le peculiarità che hanno reso unico il sound della band.[preview] Le tonalità emo che spiccavano nei primi lavori si amalgamano piacevolmente con la vena progressiva evidenziata in tempi più recenti, dando vita ad un disco ambiguo, a volte ridondante ma in ogni caso sempre, inconfondibilmente Co&Ca. Il primo impatto potrebbe non trasmettervi sensazioni positive, ma l'apprezzamento cresce con il ripetuto ascolto. Non siamo comunque di fronte al capolavoro della band, questo è poco ma sicuro. Sugli scudi il drumming ad assetto variabile  di Chris Pennie (ex-Dillinger Escape Plan), e quella manciata di brani in cui, premendo sull'acceleratore, la band riesce davvero a brillare.
In uscita anche una versione de-luxe superaccessoriata, che oltre al cd offre un bonus dvd ed il romanzo (352 pagine!) scritto da Sanchez insieme a Peter David che con l'album condivide titolo e tematiche.

Intro
Un piccolo prezzo per un grande package (doppio cd + dvd), che immortala degnamente Dave King mentre trascina i suoi Mollies sul palco del Greek Theater di Los Angeles. Un grande live album che profuma di Guinness e di folk irlandese, una attitudine che raccoglie e fa propria l'eredità non ancora reclamata degli immensi Pogues.

Chi ha avuto modo di assistere ad un concerto dei Flogging Molly (e le occasioni, anche dalle nostre parti, non sono certo mancate) saprà già cosa aspettarsi da questo disco, che vede la truppa capitanata da Dave King [preview](ve lo ricorderete qualche eone or sono in seno ai Fastway di "Waiting For The Roar"  o a capo del progetto Katmandu) immersa nel suo habitat naturale, quello della performance live. Pur non raggiungendo le vette di intensità lirica o di furore autodistruttivo che hanno fatto di Shane MacGowan l'icona punk dell'isola di smeraldo, i Mollies riescono a riempire il vuoto lasciato dai Pogues risultando assolutamente credibili nonostante il solo King possieda autentico DNA irish. I due dischetti raccolgono (quasi) per intero la testimonianza audio dello show al Greek Theater (12 settembre 2009), ma visto che anche l'occhio vuole la sua parte la band ha pensato bene di offrircene come graditissimo bonus la controparte video, raccolta in un delizioso dvd che include, inoltre, la raccolta completa di tutti i loro video-clip e un'intervista a Matt Hensley e Nathen Maxwell.

E' un disco piuttosto eterogeneo, pur muovendosi sempre nell'ambito dell'hard rock classico americano. Ogni cantante interpreta un pezzo che, stilisticamente parlando, non si discosta troppo dallo stile originale dello stesso: così abbiamo un Kid Rock che si occupa  di un sentito southern blues, Lemmy che urla un R'n'R sguaiato come solo lui sa fare, Andrew Stockdale che fa volare alta la sua voce in un epico pezzo 70s oriented o Adam Levine che offre il suo sottile timbro vocale per una delicata soul ballad.
I pezzi forti sono l'opener "Ghost" in cui Slash gioca a fare l'Angus Young della situazione e "Beautiful Dangerous" con una Fergie in gran spolvero che si muove a proprio agio tra le chitarre elettriche e distorte dell'ex ascia dei Guns N'Roses.
Brano da skippare: la strumentale "Watch This", assolutamente inutile.[preview]

Sound originale, quello dei Lasting Echo, che vede un atmosferico e spaziale indie rock miscelarsi al rock classico, non di rado tinto di folk, con ottimi spunti progressivi che donano libertà e dinamicità alle composizioni e con una ragguardevole sensibilità pop.
Interessante la voce del frontman, che ricorda quella emozionante e carica di soul di David Gilmour.
Notevoli alcuni passaggi strumentali, con intricati layer di chitarra e ritmiche complesse, il tutto senza perdere mai di vista la musicalità dei brani, che risultano energici e introspettivi allo stesso tempo.[preview]
