Moon And Stars è una manifestazione che da sei anni si tiene nella caratteristica e centralissima Piazza Grande di Locarno a poche decine di metri dal Lago Maggiore. Ogni anno passano di qui artisti di caratura internazionale e per due settimane Locarno diventa città della musica (senza che nessun abitante della cittadina raccolga firme anti-concerti e proteste varie) e quest'anno, la serata da co-headliner di Toto ed Earth, Wind & Fire è senza dubbio la più succosa, per me.

Le note di "Boogie Wonderland" aprono letteralmente le danze con i dodici musicisti degli Earth, Wind & Fire scatenati e pronti a loro volta a far scatenare la folla. Hit funky e disco anni '70 si susseguono praticamente senza sosta, una compilation delle loro canzoni più famose ha composto il set: "September", "Fantasy", "After The Love Has Gone" e "Sing A Song" tra le altre.
Un'ora e venticinque minuti di grande divertimento prodotto da un ensemble di musicisti ineccepibili e vocalmente strepitosi. Pensare che alcuni di loro sono ormai sulla sessantina è davvero incredibile.

Dopo una ventina di minuti di pausa arriva il momento da me tanto atteso. Ho assistito a diversi concerti dei Toto ma non avevo mai avuto l'occasione di vederli con Joseph Williams al microfono, il cantante di "The Seventh One" (e di "Fahrenheit"), il disco che me li ha fatti scoprire da ragazzino e che rientra nei miei dieci dischi da portare sull'isola deserta.
L'occasione, purtroppo, non è delle più felici, infatti questa temporanea reunion con relativo mini tour europeo sono stati organizzati in onore dello storico bassista Mike Porcaro il quale ha contratto il morbo di Lou Gehrig, tristemente noto anche come SLA.
Al posto di Mike è stato chiamato un altro leggendario bassista, Nathan East, noto per avere suonato con Phil Collins ed Eric Clapton tra gli altri.

La band attacca con lo strumentale epico e pomposo di "Child's Anthem" e già traspare l'ottima forma dei musicisti e la loro voglia di diventare un'unica entità con il pubblico, con il leader Steve Lukather che chiama a gran voce il coro del pubblico. Finita l'introduzione strumentale, ecco salire sul palco Joseph Williams e fin dai primi vocalizzi di "Till The End" l'impressione è che questa sarà veramente una grande serata, la sua ugola pare in ottima forma. La sintonia tra i vari membri della band è palpabile e, per me, vedere per la prima volta sul palco Steve Porcaro e Joseph Williams è emozionante.
Luke è il solito istrione, David Paich mattatore quando esce dal "nascondiglio" delle tastiere ma maestro assoluto quando si cimenta allo strumento, il groove imposto da East e dal veterano Simon Phillips è passione allo stato puro e menzione va pure alle grandi voci dei due coristi Jory Steinberg e Mabvuto Carpenter.
I lunghi momenti strumentali a cui ci avevano abituato nelle ultime tournée non vengono eseguiti a parte un breve solo di tastiere; saranno i tempi "ristretti" ma, questa volta, sono le canzoni ad essere al centro dello show: "Pamela", "Home Of The Brave", "Georgy Porgy" (con tanto di citazione di "Can't Hide Love" degli EWF e loro dedicata da Luke), "Stop Loving You".
La scaletta copre solo i primi dieci anni di carriera dei Toto, con brani che vanno dall'omonimo disco d'esordio del 1978 fino a "The Seventh One" del 1988; se proprio devo lamentarmi di qualcosa, devo dire che avrei preferito qualche canzone in più dai due dischi di Williams anche a discapito, eventualmente, di qualche classico. "Only The Children", "Straight For The Heart" o "Could This Be Love" ci sarebbero state proprio bene.

Nei prossimi mesi dovrebbe uscire il DVD del concerto tenuto a Copenhagen qualche giorno dopo, consiglio l'acquisto a tutti i fan che non hanno potuto raggiungere Locarno.

Un ultimo pensiero va sicuramente a un grande come Mike Porcaro che tanto ha dato sul palco e in studio a una band storica come quella dei Toto.

Dopo la release del lungamente rimandato debutto degli Automatic Loveletter "Truth Or Dare", il nostro Schwarz ha avuto la possiblità di intervistare Juliet Simms, front-woman, nonché fondatrice e songwriter di questa new sensation dell'alternative rock a stelle e strisce.

"Truth Or Dare" arriva dopo 3 anni di continui problemi, diventa realtà dopo un sacco di controversie legati all'etichetta e molti altri inconvenienti che hanno ritardato a dismisura la release di questo album: puoi spiegarci esattamente ciò che è accaduto???
Dopo aver registrato il disco per la Epic nel 2006, l’obiettivo era di andare in tour per costruire una solida base di fans. Così abbiamo fatto, senza nessun supporto da parte di nessuno, né dell’etichetta né di alcun promoter o manager. Il mio agente Allison Hagendorf e mia madre hanno giocato un ruolo fondamentale in tutto ciò e sono stati eccezionali nel ricoprire tutti questi ruoli. Pensa che siamo andati in tour con band come Between The Trees e Every Avenue a bordo di una vecchia e scassata Ford Excursion! Una volta raggiunto un maggior seguito abbiamo trovato un manager ed un booking agent per programmare un tour, facendo di spalla a band come Secondhand Serenade, Cute Is What We Aim For e All Time Low. Il Warped tour del 2008 è stato uno dei nostri primi tour come band di supporto, ed è stato a quel punto che l'etichetta ha iniziato ad intuire che per la band era venuto il momento di avere qualche possibilità in più. Subito dopo però hanno commesso l'errore di far fuori il mio precedente agente, Allison, consegnando il gruppo ad un altro A&R man. Pensa che a quel punto hanno cominciato a dirci che presto il nostro disco di debutto sarebbe stato pubblicato, insomma tutti i miei sogni stavano per realizzarsi, ma… per far ciò dovevo cercare musicisti più “professionali” facendo fuori gli altri ragazzi della band! Se non avessi seguito i loro consigli mi avrebbero messo alla porta, così all'inizio del 2009, dopo varie audizioni ho reclutato i membri della nuova band. Cominciammo il nostro primo tour da headliner il giorno del mio compleanno, ma nel mezzo del tour ricevetti una telefonata dal mio agente che mi informava che l’etichetta ci aveva appena escluso dal loro roster poiché il nuovo Presidente della label doveva a tutti tagliare i costi! Non essendo coinvolto nella storia della band, non aveva alcun interesse a continuare ad investire nel gruppo. Due settimane più tardi, con nostra grande sorpresa la RCA ci ha contattato e ci ha fatto firmare un nuovo contratto. Sull’onda dell’entusiasmo abbiamo scritto e registrato del nuovo materiale. Nel febbraio 2010, il mio agente ha ricevuto dalla RCA un ulteriore stop, ma tutto è bene quel che finisce bene……ora siamo con la Sony Giappone e tutto è perfetto!

Fin dagli inizi sono cambiati molti membri della band, l’unico comune denominatore di tutte le line up sei te. Dobbiamo considerare la band un progetto solista di "Juliet Simms" sotto “mentite spoglie” oppure possiamo considerare gli A. LL una band al 100%? Sicuramente se non avessi avuto così tanta determinazione ad andare avanti gli A.LL no

n avrebbero potuto essere una realtà oggi.....
Effettivamente mi sono caricata sulle mie spalle tutta la responsabilità di questo gruppo, ma ad essere sincera senza il costante aiuto e supporto per molti anni del mio chitarrista e fratello Tommy e di Daniel (ex-batterista della band), probabilmente non ce l’avrei fatta. Beh, diciamo che gli A.LL non sarebbero qui oggi senza la mia perseveranza, ma ci sono state delle persone chiave che mi sono state di fondamentale aiuto.

Nel 2007, avete cominciato a lavorare al vostro album di debutto con Matt Squire ed è stata certamente una sfida per entrambi. Ora avete lavorato sotto la supervisione di Josh Abraham: che cosa hai imparato da quella esperienza che abbia in qualche modo facilitato questa nuova avventura con Abraham? Quali sono state le principali differenze tra questi produttori?
Dopo essere stata per anni on the road e per tanto tempo in studio, ero pronta per un’ulteriore esperienza per quando riguarda la produzione di un disco vero e proprio. Effettivamente a ben guardare non vi sono grandissime differenze nel loro modo di lavorare anche se devo ammettere che sia Matt che Josh hanno un loro approccio ben definito al processo di produzione

"Hush", utilizzato come il primo singolo di questo album di debutto, è l'unica traccia che continua a seguirvi fin dagli esordi (la prima versione è stata registrata su "Recover" un Ep pubblicato nel 2007, quindi è stata registrata in una nuova versione per l'EP "Automatic Loveletter" dello scorso anno): cosa rappresenta per voi???
…beh per me quel pezzo rappresenta un bel po’ me stessa, è un nostro punto fermo. Pensa che ho  incontrato fans o persone che conoscevano la canzone ma non sapevano che era nostra haha!!!!!

Su "Truth or Dare" possiamo trovare 3 canzoni già pubblicate sulla vostra release precedente dell'anno scorso, come "Hush" / "My Goodbye" / "The Day That Saved Us": per "Hush" ne abbiamo appena parlato, ma perché avete scelto di pubblicarle nuovamente? Facevano parte del passato, perché non provare a realizzare un album con canzoni nuove di zecca?
Per "The Day That Saved Us," posso dirti che

sia il brano che tra tutti meriti di essere trasmesso  dalle radio. Per essere onesti, avrei piuttosto preferito registrare e pubblicare un altro pezzo intitolato "Black Ink Revenge" (un diversa versione di "My Goodbye", molto più indie), ma l'etichetta discografica (RCA) non la pensava allo stesso modo… Ma dopo tutti questi anni di traversie e problematiche ho imparato a distinguere dove realmente combattere all’ultimo sangue e dove invece lasciar correre…..infatti proporremo "Black Ink Revenge" questa estate durante le nostre esibizioni acustiche!

In passato hai lavorato con altre band come LoveHateHero / Secondhand Serenades / All Time Low e Cartel: cosa hai imparato di così importante per la tua band?
Innanzitutto mi hanno aiutato a guadagnare la stima e l’affetto dei fans ma anche e soprattutto ho imparato a cantare con altri artisti, migliorando lo studio delle melodie oltre che sperimentare altri approcci al songwriting. Come negare che ogni singola esperienza mi ha insegnato un sacco?

Purtroppo il rock è sessista per antonomasia, al giorno d'oggi nel 2010 penso che la maggior parte delle persone sembra interessato ad una musicista donna per il suo aspetto e non per le sue qualità musicali.... quali erano e quali sono le maggiori difficoltà per essere accettata come una vera e propria rockettara (senza per forza guardare al sesso...)?
Sinceramente non è una difficoltà per me visto che sto facendo tutto questo ormai da moltissimi anni. Penso che io abbia dimostrato di essere come uno dei ragazzi della band… ma con le poppe!!!

In questi giorni date la possibilità ai vostri fans di scaricare attraverso il vostro sito una traccia inedita intitolata "To Die For". Quanto è forte il tuo rapporto con il web? Pensi che potrebbe essere un modo molto importante per promuovere la musica? Non è così normale regalare musica in un tempo in cui tutti sembrano essere contro il file-sharing
Il web è estremamente importante. Ti da la possibilità di come rimanere in contatto con i tuoi fan e interagire con essi. Perché non regalare una canzone? E’ una questione di onestà, tanto potrebbe essere trovata gratuitamente online in ogni caso, o no? Preferisco dare ai nostri fan qualcosa da ascoltare e condividere con i loro amici, in questo modo allarghiamo la nostra cerchia di fans, che canteranno le nostre canzoni durante i nostri live shows!!!

Nella band stai suonando con tuo fratello, mentre tua sorella è un'attrice: quanto ha influenzato il songwriting essere stata un’artista cresciuta tra artisti?
Era un ambiente dove potevi trovare costantemente ispirazione, ci siamo influenzati vicendevolmente a livello creativo. Ho sempre amato il fatto di poter bussare alla porta della stanza di mio fratello o di mia sorella mostrando loro qualche mia nuova composizione.

Devo ammettere che durante i primi due/tre ascolti non ho trovato il disco così sorprendente, solo dopo svariati ascolti il mio giudizio è cambiato. Nella recensione ho indicato solo tre parole: fresco, accattivante, graffiante
Bene, grazie! Sono veramente lieta che la pensi così.

I testi sembrano essere davvero personali e proprio come "scrittori di lettere d’amore", mi puoi spiegare qualcosa in più andando maggiormente in profondità? In alcuni casi sembra che tu sia una vera combattente contro le difficoltà della vita e nello stesso tempo un incredibile romantica... non è vero?
Come faccio ad andare più a fondo……in fondo si parla di amore e già di per sé l'amore è qualcosa di profondo aha aha. Sì, esattamente, io mi sento un amante e una combattente al tempo stesso. Si rischia di ferire la persona che si ama……

Mi hanno colpito molto i testi di “Story Of My Life”, all'inizio canti "a parte tutti i sogni di quando si hanno quindici anni, la vita è davvero difficile anche se stai dicendo a tua mamma e papà che sei felice." Sei contenta ora? È stato difficile arrivare al vostro punto? Che cosa potete suggerire ad una giovane band/artista che vive situazioni come questa?
Sì ora sono felice! Era incredibilmente difficile ma non di meno divertente. Vorrei suggerire di non rinunciare mai ai propri sogni, certo possono capitare momenti in cui ci si può scoraggiare, ma devi riuscire a scrollarti tutto e guardare avanti.

Juliett, siamo allafine: ti ringrazio nuovamente per le tue gentili risposte, puoi dirci cosa dobbiamo aspettarci dalla band nel prossimo futuro?
Sei sempre il benvenuto e mille grazie! Staremo fuori tutta l'estate con il Vans Warped Tour, il disco è stato pubblicato il 22/06/10…. E un video musicale arriverà abbastanza presto!

After the release of Automatic Loveletter's long-awaited debut album "Truth Or Dare", our writer Schwarz took the chance to put some questions to Juliet Simms, founder, leader and singer-songwriter of this great new rock sensation.

Q: “Truth Or Dare” comes after three years of struggling, it becomes reality after a lot of fighting due to label's problems and many others problems delayed the issue for long three years: can you explain to us exactly what happened?
A: After recording the record for Epic in 2006, we were told to go out and tour and build a fan base. So we did with no tour support, no manager and no booking agent. My A&R, Allison Hagendorf and my mom were playing all these roles. Playing tours with bands such as Between The Trees and Every Avenue in a beat up old Ford Excursion. Once we established more of a following, a manager and a booking agent, we started getting more tours with bands like Secondhand Serenade, Cute Is What We Aim For and All Time Low. 2008 Warped tour was one of our first supported tours. The Label started to see that there was something there. After they made the mistake of firing Allison, I was handed over to another A&R rep. They told me the record was coming out and all my dreams were about to come true, BUT… I have to fire everyone in your band. I was told I would be dropped if I didn’t get more of a "professional" band. So early 2009, we held auditions and hired a band. Out on our first headlining tour, on my birthday and in the middle of nowhere, I got a call from my A&R rep telling me that I’m dropped from the label and that the new president of the label was cutting all costs. Since she was not involved in any part of the history of my band, she had no invested interest in the band. Two weeks later, RCA scooped me up and signed me. I wrote and recorded. In Feb 2010, my RCA A&R rep got the boot.  But then I got picked up by Sony Japan and Sin and all is great now!  :D

Q: Since the beginning the members of the band changed as a normal process of growing up but the only one who continue to go on through all these changes is you. Do we have to consider the band a solo project of “Juliet Simms” covering his name by a band's name or is it 100% a band? Surely if you didn't had all the determination to go on Automatic Loveletter couldn't be a reality nowadays...
A: I was driving it all along, but with the constant help and support from my guitarist and brother Tommy and, for many years, Daniel (my ex-drummer) who was in the band. Let’s just say, Automatic Loveletter wouldn't be here today without my persistence, BUT I couldn't have done it with out a few key people :)

Q: In 2007, you worked on the first issue of your debut album with Matt Squire and you revealed that experience was a total challenge for both of you, challenging each other. Now you worked under the supervision of Josh Abraham: what did you learn from that experience which was needed for this new one? What were the main differences between these producers? Do you still have the result of the job done by Matt Squire?
A: After touring for years and recording so much, I was seasoned and able to speak "Produca!" Haha They’re not much different actually - both are good looking radical Jewish dudes. LOL... but seriously Matt and Josh both have there own styles.

Q: “Hush”, used as the first single of this debut album is the only track which continue to follow you since the beginning (the first version has been recorded on “Recover”, an EP issued in 2007, then it has been recorded into a new version for the “Automatic Loveletter” EP last year): what does it represent for you?
A: It represents a staple for me. I’ve met fans or people that knew that song and didn’t even know it was my song haha...

Q: On “Truth Or Dare” we can find three songs already issued on your previous release of last year such as “Hush”, “My Goodbye” and “The Day That Saved Us”: for “Hush” it has just been answered but why did you choose to release again those songs? They were part of the past, why not becoming a new refreshing way with all brand new songs?
A: For “The Day That Saved Us”, I can say that I feel it’s a song that deserves radio play. And to be honest, I would have rather recorded "Black Ink Revenge" (a different more indie version of "My Goodbye") but the record label (RCA) didn't feel the same way I did… So I learned to pick and choose my battles. So I’ll be playing "Black Ink Revenge" this summer at acoustic performances ;) boom!

Q: In the past you worked with other bands like LoveHateHero, Secondhand Serenades, All Time Low and Cartel: how much did you earned something important to be used on A.LL. both lyrically and musically??
A: It helped me gain fans. I learned how to sing with others, got better at harmonies, AND got to experience other peoples style of writing. Taught me alot.

Q: Unfortunately rock is sexist considered, nowadays on 2010 I think that most of the people seems interested in a female musician for her appearance and not for her musical qualities…what were and what are the biggest difficulties to be accepted as a real rocker one (it doesn't matter if you’re female or male...)?
A: Well it’s not really a difficulty for me now Is i have been doing it for a long time. I think I've proven myself to one of the boys… but with boobs

Q: During these days you're giving away through your official website a “giveaway song for free”, “To Die For”. How strong your relationship with the web is? I mean, do you think it could be a very important way of promoting the music? It's not so normal giving away music for free in a time when everybody seems to be against file-sharing and stuff like that…
A: The web is hugely important. It’s how you stay in touch with your fans and interact with them. Why not give away a song? Let’s be honest. It'll be ripped off for free online anyways. Haha I'd rather give my fans something to listen to, to learn, to show their friends, and, in turn, making new fans=more kids at shows singing your songs! Yay! Win win!

Q: You're playing in the band with your brother while your sister is an actress: how much influenced your songwriting being an artist growing up among artists?
A: It was a constant creative environment… We fed off each other which made it very inspiring. I loved that I could knock on my brother or sister's door and they’d welcome a new song I wanted to show them.

Q: I have to admit that for the firsts two or three listening sessions of the record I haven't found it so amazing but after those times something has changed on the songs (or on me....) and now I simply love this cd! On the review I added just three words speaking about this debut: amazing, fresh and scathing…really impressive!
A: Well Thank You! I’m glad you think so :)

Q: The lyrics seem to be really personal and just like “really loveletters”, can you explain them a little bit deeper? In a way it seems that you're a fighter against the difficulties of life and on the same time an incredible lover…isn't it?
A: How can I make it any deeper… it’s Love… love is deep Haha. Yes exactly, I am a lover and a fighter. You always hurt the one you love…

Q: I was impressed by the lyrics of “Story Of My Life”, at the beginning you sing that “beside all your dream when you are fifteen, the life is really hard also if you're telling your mom and dad that you're happy.” Are you happy now? Was it difficult arriving at your point? What can you suggest to a younger band/artist who's living situations like this?
A: Yes I am happy now…see -------->:D It was incredibly difficult but fun nonetheless. I would suggest to never give up on your dreams and don’t let the man get you down. Discouragement may come but you gotta shake it off and push through.

Q: Juliet, we are at the end: thanking again for your kindly answers, can you let us know what we have to expect from the band in the near future?
A: You're quite welcome and thank you too! We'll be out on the summer's Vans Warped Tour, and the record was released June 22nd… And a music video is coming soon! :) xoxo

Preceduto dal singolo “Fade” che gira tra le varie radio universitarie americane dallo scorso aprile, vede finalmente oggi la luce "Armored Heart" che rappresenta il primo passo nel music business di questi Runaway City, grazie ad un’etichetta, la Vertusend Records, anch’essa all’esordio e con un coraggio da vendere. O forse mettere sotto contratto questi ragazzotti è stato un affare più per loro che per la band perché la classe ed il songwriting di qualità che sfoggiano con incredibile scioltezza è qualcosa di stupefacente. Il trittico iniziale formato da “Daybreak”, “Scars”,  “Fade” vi fa sobbalzare dalla sedia in un attimo grazie a ritmiche precise e chitarre mai invadenti, a volte appena arpeggiate, inframmezzate da momenti più elettrici sui quali svetta la voce matura e carismatica di Josh Edwards. Prodotto da Jason Elgin (Collective Soul, Terrible Things), il disco non presenta fillers, tutti i brani qui presenti vi faranno godere dall’inizio alla fine, grazie a melodie orecchiabili e mai scontate. Troverete semi-ballads come “No Escape”, il cui refrain centrale è perfetto contorno di un concerto fatto in un’arena festante, ballate dal sapore vagamente folk come “Try”, così come si potranno respirare atmosfere spensierate e sbarazzine nella solare “Save Me”. E tutto questo da un gruppo la cui età media sfiora i 22 anni... ma dove andranno questi ragazzotti provenienti da una piccola cittadina del North Carolina (Mont Airy)??? Le premesse ci sono tutte, non accorgersi di questa splendida realtà equivarrebbe a commettere un delitto. E nessuno di voi vuole qualcuno sulla coscienza, vero??

As soon as I found out who was the special guest for Bon Jovi's concert in London on the night I would have attended, I wanted to learn more about this "new device". This band is composed by five London musicians who, despite their young age, draw liberally on the great hard'n'heavy bands of the past (i.e. Motley Crue, Guns N 'Roses and Skid Row), adding a touch of modernity that makes it more enjoyable to listen to nowadays (in the same vein of bands such as Hinder or Burn Halo).
"Takin' Over", released in 2009, is their debut album and consists of twelve granitic and melodic tracks, led by the 80s oriented riff and especially by the clean and broad vocals of singer Daniel Leigh, excellent both on studio and live as I have witnessed.
The beautiful power ballad "In The Fading Light" and "Moth To The Flame" alternates with faster 80s hair metal styled tracks like "On Fire" and "Seven Nights, Seven Bodies".
New Device are passed at their first attempt, but I think there is still room to improve, maybe trying to make their sound even more younger to be competitive in this genre.

Non appena ho scoperto chi fosse lo special guest del concerto londinese dei Bon Jovi a cui avrei assistito, ho voluto approfondire la conoscenza di questo "nuovo aggeggio". I New Device sono cinque musicisti che, a dispetto della giovane età, prendono a piene mani dalle grandi band hard'n'heavy del passato come Motley Crue, Guns N' Roses e Skid Row aggiungendo quel tocco di modernità che rende tutto più piacevole da ascoltare oggigiorno, alla stregua di band come Burn Halo o Hinder.
"Takin' Over", uscito nel 2009, è il loro album di debutto e si compone di dodici tracce granitiche ma melodiche, in cui a farla da padrone sono i riff 80s oriented e soprattutto la voce pulita ed ampia del cantante Daniel Leigh, bravissimo su disco quanto dal vivo, come ho potuto constatare.
Belle le power ballad "In The Fading Light" e "Moth To The Flame" che si alternano a pezzi più veloci come "On Fire" e "Seven Nights, Seven Bodies" in puro stile 80s hair metal.
Promossi al primo tentativo, credo ci siano comunque margini per un miglioramento dal punto di vista complessivo delle composizioni, dovranno forse cercare di rendere ancora più fresco il loro sound per essere competitivi in questo genere.

They're back!
Back after a six years and back for the second time in Italy in few months.
Finally, I add.
I have always appreciated The Cranberries and I have always believed that, after all, they were only the support band for Dolores, frontwoman and outstanding singer. Instead, after two anonymous solo album released by the thirty-nine year-old singer, I had to change my mind. Evidently, the mixture and magic between Dolores, the Hogan brothers and Fergal Lawler is such that every single member is essential for the band.

Under the burning sun of one of this summer's hottest days, at 19.30 the four Irish musicians come on stage. The Cranberries is the second main band of the first day of the Heineken Jammin' Festival 2010.
Although they have been very recently in Italy, although they should have performed three other dates (in a few days will play in Rome, Perugia and Turin, the last two concerts have been cancelled due to Dolores' illness) and, above all, despite they have to play before giants like Aerosmith, who are not playing in Italy since many years, there are many fans for them. And those fans were right, because we enjoyed a memorable concert.

In the past I've seen tv live performances by Dolores and not always she sang well like she is able to do in the studio, but this time she sang divinely, managing to carry on stage all the energy and pathos contained in the studio albums. She interacted with the audience between songs having a high time, even suffering the hot and oppressive sky of Mestre like us in the audience.
The stage was obviously her own but, as already explained, the chemistry between the four guys (plus multi-instrumentalist Denny DeMarchi, who already worked with his brother Steve, with Alias and Dolores) made it even more energetic and magical.
All the band's career was taken into consideration with songs from all five albums plus two songs taken from the singer's solo albums.
So many are the hits that thrilled the twenty thousand people in the crowd, but euphoria reached the highest peak with the conclusive "Dreams" and especially with the classic song "Zombie" which, despite of its lyrics that tells of wars and deaths, was able to trigger a happy and entranced audience. How good not to speak English!

The Cranberries proved on stage that they're back at the top, now we only have to wait and hope that the same miracle will be recreated in the studio.. maybe for a long time.

Sono tornati!
Tornati dopo una pausa durata ben sei anni e tornati per la seconda volta in Italia nel giro di pochissimi mesi.
Finalmente, aggiungo.
Da sempre apprezzo i Cranberries e ho sempre creduto che, in fondo, fossero solo la band di supporto a Dolores, frontwoman e singer d'eccezione. Invece, dopo due anonimi solo album della cantante trentanovenne, mi sono dovuto ricredere. Evidentemente, l'amalgama e la magia tra Dolores, i fratelli Hogan e Fergal Lawler sono tali da rendere indispensabile la presenza di ognuno nella band.

Sotto il sole cocente di uno dei giorni più caldi di questo inizio estate, ecco che alle 19.30 si presentano sul palco i quattro irlandesi. The Cranberries è la seconda main band della prima giornata dell'Heineken Jammin' Festival 2010.
Pur essendo passati da poco sul suolo italico, pur avendo altre tre date in cui esibirsi (in pochi giorni suoneranno a Roma, Perugia e Torino, queste ultime due date poi annullate per una malattia di Dolores) e, soprattutto, pur trovandosi a dover suonare prima di giganti come gli Aerosmith, i quali non suonano in Italia da tempo immemore, sono in molti i fan presenti. E hanno fatto bene ad accorrere, perché abbiamo goduto di un concerto memorabile.

In passato mi è capitato di vedere in tv delle esibizioni live di Dolores non proprio all'altezza di ciò che riesce a fare in studio ma questa volta ha cantato divinamente, riuscendo a trasportare sul palco tutta l'energia e il pathos contenuti negli album in studio. Ha dialogato con il pubblico tra un brano e l'altro e non ha smesso di scatenarsi nemmeno per un attimo, pur soffrendo il caldo e afoso cielo mestrino come noi tra il pubblico; infine, ha addirittura sfoggiato un cambio d'abito come nella più classica tradizione sanremese.
La scena era ovviamente tutta sua ma, come già spiegato, l'alchimia tra i quattro (più il polistrumentista Denny DeMarchi già collaboratore, insieme al fratello Steve, di Alias e della Dolores solista) ha reso tutto ancora più energico e magico.
Tutta la carriera della band è stata presa in considerazione con brani presi da tutti e cinque gli album più due canzoni tratte dagli album solisti della cantante.
Tante le hit che hanno appassionato i circa ventimila presenti ma i momenti di massima esaltazione si sono raggiunti con la conclusiva "Dreams" e soprattutto con la ormai classica "Zombie" che, pur avendo un testo che narra di guerre e morti, è stata in grado di far scatenare gaiamente un pubblico felice e rapito. Bello non sapere l'inglese!

Dal vivo hanno sicuramente dimostrato che il loro come back ha un alto valore artistico, ora non ci resta che attendere e sperare che lo stesso prodigio venga ricreato in studio…magari per lungo tempo.
